Turn a simple beach day into something memorable just south of Depoe Bay. This free, family-friendly workshop at Beverly Beach blends ocean exploration, creativity, and hands-on fun—collect shells, create art, and connect with the coast in a way kids (and adults) won’t forget.

Turn a simple beach day into something memorable just south of Depoe Bay. At Beverly Beach, a free hands-on workshop blends ocean exploration, art, and a deeper connection to the coast. It starts the way the best coastal moments do — a slow walk on the sand, something interesting in your hand, and the sound of the Pacific in the background. From there, it turns into something a little more memorable. That is exactly what Friends of Otter Rock Marine Reserve is creating with its Art by the Shore series — family-friendly workshops where collecting shells and seaweed becomes part of the experience, and those same materials are transformed into sun-printed cyanotype art.

The workshop begins with a stroll along Beverly Beach, where families collect natural materials with interesting shapes and textures. Along the way, participants learn about creature morphology, marine reserve protections, and why take restrictions matter in protected ocean areas. It is the kind of activity where kids stay curious, adults learn something new, and the beach becomes more than just a pretty place to walk.

After the beach walk, the group heads inside the Meeting Yurt to create cyanotypes — beautiful blue-and-white prints made using sunlight and collected materials. Shells, seaweed, feathers, and other beach finds become part of the final artwork. It is hands-on, approachable for all ages, and a fun way to bring a piece of the coast home with you.

Otter Rock Marine Reserve protects a special stretch of the Oregon Coast where marine life can thrive. Programs like this help visitors understand how ocean habitats work, why protected areas matter, and how small choices can help care for the coast. The best part is that it does not feel like a lecture. It feels like a beach day — just one with a little more meaning behind it.
